Blister cards and clamshells are one of the most popular packaging solutions in which the customer needs to be able to see the product. With the proper design of the blister or clamshell, significant amounts of room can be saved when properly packaged in a corrugated master shipper case. For both the card and the plastic blister, the design possibilities are endless. You will find blister packaging used in cosmetics packaging, tool and hardware packaging, toy packaging, food packaging, and sporting goods packaging. Clamshells are often used in electronics, cosmetics, and specialty products.
Because of the resins and the way plastic clamshells are made, it makes them difficult to recycle. Many berries come in plastic clamshell packaging, which is great because there are holes on the bottom and you can wash the berries right in the container. However, most of these are #6 plastic which is virtually impossible to recycle. So how do we make clamshells green? The simple answer: just reuse them. Take these containers and put something else in them after you've opened them. It is not impossible to recycle them, it is just a matter of finding a facility that will do it for you. Sometimes there is a chipboard card that is placed behind the product in the blister, which can be made out of recycled paperboard giving them more green attributes.
